What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating as it is more commonly known falls into two main categories; primary hyperhidrosis which can start at any point in an individual’s lifetime and secondary hyperhidrosis which is caused as a result of underlying conditions such as a thyroid disorder, diabetes mellitus or gout. Sweating is an important function as it helps us to maintain our body’s temperature but those affected with hyperhidrosis sweat profusely and this in turn causes embarrassment and may affect self confidence.

What causes Hyperhidrosis?

It has been suggested that a dysfunction of the hypothalamus (part of the brain that regulates temperature) may be a contributing factor. Clinical research has not shown any structural changes of the sweat glands in the affected areas or a malfunction of the signals from the brain. Genetics may also play a part but the condition is thought to affect men and women equally. Lesser causes of excessive sweating may be exercise, spicy foods and caffeine. For those suffering from hyperhidrosis there may be no apparent cause and indeed they are just as likely to sweat too much when it is cold as when it is hot.  Most sufferers find the condition distressing and this may also aggravate the condition.

Are there any side-effects?

Side- effects include mild bruising or tenderness at the injection site and occasionally increased sweating from other sites. Rare side effects may include itching, myalgia, allergic reactions and muscle weakness.

Is the treatment painful?

Treatment involves a number of small injections with Botulinum Toxin (Dysport®) using a fine gauge needle into the affected areas. A mild stinging sensation may be felt for a few seconds during injections but once complete there is usually no discomfort. There may be slight redness around the injection sites which will normally resolve within a few hours.

How long will the effects last?

Most patients notice some significant changes within the first week after treatment. The effects usually last between 4-7 months but may vary according to the area treated and the individual’s response. A comprehensive and informative consultation will be carried out prior to treatment.
