Why Laser Hair Reduction?

The traditional ways of removing hair – shaving, plucking, depilatory creams and waxing – are time consuming and results are short lived. Electrolysis can permanently remove hair; it is extremely slow, painful and may cause scarring. It involves treating one hair at a time but is an option for white, blond and grey hair. Permanent laser hair reduction is a safe and effective way to reduce unwanted body and facial hair.

What is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle while your hair is its anagen, or active phase of growth. The laser light energy is converted into heat, causing thermal damage to the follicle without harming the surrounding tissue. Hair re-growth is impeded in the damaged hair follicle.

Since hairs enter their growth cycle at different times, several treatments are necessary to disable all of the follicles in one area.

What is the hair growth cycle and how does it work?

Anagen

The anagen phase is the active phase. During this phase the hair grows about 1 cm every 28 days. Scalp hair stays in this active phase of growth for 2-6 years. Some people have difficulty growing their hair beyond a certain length because they have a short active phase of growth. On the other hand, people with very long hair have a long active phase of growth. The hair on the arms, legs, eyelashes, and eyebrows have a very short active growth phase of about 30-45 days explaining why they are so much shorter than scalp hair.

Catagen

The catagen phase is a transitional stage and 3% of all hairs are in this phase at any time. This phase lasts for about 2-3 weeks. During this time growth stops and the outer root sheath shrinks and attaches to the root of the hair.

Telogen

Telogen is the resting phase and accounts for 10-15% of all hairs. This phase lasts for about 100 days for hairs on the scalp and much longer for hairs on the eyebrows, eyelashes, arms and legs. During this phase the hair follicle is completely at rest. Pulling out a hair in this phase will reveal a solid, hard, dry, white material at the root. Approximately 25-100 telogen hairs are shed normally each day, generally more in autumn and winter. After the Telogen phase the cycle is complete and the hair goes back into the anagen phase. New hair shafts form and older hair is pushed out and the hair growth cycle starts over again.

How many treatments will I need?

Only 30% or less of your hair will be in the active growth phase at any one time depending on the body area. Thus, a series of treatments will be required to achieve long-term improvement you desire. These treatments are spaced approxinmately 4-12 weeks apart, depending on anatomical position and hair growth cycles. On average 6-8 treatments are required.

Does it hurt?

Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but generally laser hair removal is not as painful as waxing or electrolysis, but the sensation is different. It resembles a rubber band snapping against the skin for a quick second with each pulse.

Are there any side effects?

This will depend on the area being treated. There may be some redness that may last from a few minutes to an hour. Sensitive skin is perfectly safe to treat with laser.

Am I suitable for laser hair Reduction?

Both men and women are suitable for laser hair removal.

All skin types can be treated including Afro-Caribbean. The laser is not effective for blond, white or grey hair as it needs to have pigment (melanin) for the laser to target the hair shaft and follicle.

Is laser hair Reduction permanent?

The average patient in clinical studies sees a 48% reduction in hair growth after three

treatments and up to an 80% lasting reduction after six to eight treatments (results vary). After you have completed a series of four to six treatments, any remaining hair will usually be finer and lighter in color. Most patients require one or two touch-up treatments per year. Blond, platinum, most red, grey and vellus hair will not respond to this treatment.

Is laser treatment safe?

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that laser treatment can lead to skin problems or potential skin cancer risks. Our clinic is registered with the Healthcare Commission and our medical staff are fully trained to ensure that your safety is priority.
