Why Laser Acne Treatment
Laser Acne treatments offer a no down-time approach to help acne lesions and help reduce the severity of future break-outs. You can return to work or school immediately after treatment-the only side effect will be slight facial redness. Laser treatments DO NOT induce prolonged dryness, severe redness or mental depression.
What is Acne?
Acne is caused by the sebaceous glands over producing sebum which then combines with the dead skin cells leading to blocked pores causing the P.Acnes bacteria to multiply culminating in blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, cysts and nodules. Acne eruptions usually occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms. Acne is not restricted to teenagers; adults in their 20s, 30’s and even 40’s can get acne. There are many reasons for the cause of acne. Genetics; if your parents suffered with acne you may be pre-disposed. Hormones; teenage growth spurts, menstrual cycle or menopause. Exuberant use of over the counter products; they may exacerbate the condition by changing the pH balance of the skin, often leading to inflammation.
What are the different stages of acne?
Grade 1 acne - Mostly open and closed comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) with few pustules (pimples, spots)
Grade 2 acne – Open and closed comedones with many papules (hard round bumps)
Grade 3 acne - Open and closed comedones with papules and pustules
Grade 4 acne - Open and closed comedones with papules, pustules nodules and cysts (usually very red and painful at this stage)
How does the laser treatment work?
Laser light pulses are delivered through the skin's surface, targeting the P. Acnes bacteria; Propionibacterium acnes; is a type of bacteria normally present on the skin and they may increase during puberty or hormonal fluctuations i.e. menstruation or menopause.
Initially treatments start with two per week for two weeks as clinical data suggests that most patients find their acne improves after two weeks of twice weekly treatments. Whilst many patients continue to improve over the months following treatment, some patients experience a slowing down in their improvement and for this reason we recommend maintenance treatments as required. Everyone is individual and what may be an appropriate treatment for one person may not clear another’s acne because many factors affect results, including the cause(s) of the acne, a person’s skin type and the grade of acne. Acne responds especially well when treated early in order to maximise effectiveness and help to prevent scarring.
What are the side effects?
Immediately following the procedure you may experience some redness and slight swelling. The redness and swelling usually dissipate within one to three days. If necessary, makeup can be applied to the treated area immediately. It is extremely important to apply a moisturizer and SPF45 sun block and avoid sun exposure on a daily basis to prevent sun damage.

Is the treatment painful?
Many patients describe the laser pulses as feeling like the snap of a rubber band against the skin; however treatments carried out over active lesions may cause a little discomfort.
When should I see results?
Effects are cumulative. After the first treatment, you might see improvements. The number of lesions and severity of break-outs should reduce over the course of treatment and beyond. Some patients continue to improve 2 months after their last treatment.
Is laser treatment safe?
There is no scientific evidence to suggest that laser treatment can lead to skin problems or potential skin cancer risks. Our clinic is registered with the Healthcare Commission and our medical staff are fully trained to ensure that your safety is priority.
